It’s almost 2012! With almost 2 years of changing sites, reassurances, and… no releases, we’ve finally come to terms that this software development model is just not working for us. Hence why we are writing to you today.

What do you mean?

We have rethought the plan for Lincom. Before, we wanted our distribution to be a fork of openSUSE. But we have come to realize that we simply do not have the resources to do or maintain this. So we have decided to change paths for the project.

You’re shutting down, aren’t you…

Absolutely not! We love this project and dedicate a great deal of time to it with a passion. We don’t want to just turn on our sponsors after so long. You may have guessed some parts of it from our Tumblr, which will remain there for now.

So what are you doing then?

We have decided to officially support any desktops that, well, upstream can’t handle! Currently, as you know, GNOME and KDE are the main desktops that are given attention. Our job here is to support other desktops like the Trinity Desktop Environment, MATE, and Razor-Qt.

What happened to Build.Lincom?

It’s still there. It’s alive. We have our Jenkins building some internal Java projects and public ISO images. And packages such as branding are being built and added as a separate repository.

Java projects? Huh?

We’re big fans of Java. Portability is wonderful, and the language itself is easy for us to use. We decided to go ahead and include the openJDK 7 with our releases as well! Some programs that you might use, such as a first time wizard, may be run by Java. You just may not notice it.

I want to help!

That’s great! We (still) don’t have any procedure to add you guys, and our bug tracker happens to be down. We’re planning on using Bugzilla for the bug tracking. We had a wiki with our old The Bug Genie tracker, but The Bug Genie has been giving us a multitude of strange problems, so we scrapped it. A wiki will hopefully be set up on the website soon, but until then, documentation might be a bit scarce.

And again,

Thanks for sticking with us. We know you’re disappointed and frustrated. Heck, we’d be surprised if you hung around that long, and you deserve a metal if you do. Our goal for 2012 is to create, debug, release, and satisfy.
