What is Lincom?
Lincom was many things. We are currently a distribution that remixes the openSUSE distribution and produces custom ISOs with the latest desktops, from GNOME and KDE to Trinity, MATE, and Razor-Qt.
Was many things?
We had different goals when we started out. It took a very long time to iron them all out and make sense of it all.
- Initially, Lincom was just a Linux From Scratch build, bent on adding the RPM package manager and a custom software manager. Basically, it was what Arch is today, except we didn’t think it through when we initially made it.
- We then moved on to the distribution scene, taking what we had from Linux From Scratch. We tried to move to the DEB packaging format, trying to package Lincom in .debs. That did not work.
- Next was moving back to RPM and trying the same thing, which was probably not logical at all, but it was testing periods those days.
- We finally decided to try basing off of Fedora. However, we could not set up Koji for a number of reasons, and we kept messing things up.
- There was the idea of np5m, which would imitate what the AUR is to Arch. We debated and tried to implement the system for a while. Eventually we stopped because we had lost sight of the original goal.
- Finally, we came to openSUSE. And here we are today.
It’s been a messy ride, met with a lot of carelessness and failure. We hope to remedy this as soon as possible and make up for all the lost time.
Why openSUSE?
Simple. Great. Unique. YaST2. Packaging that makes sense. A good policy with enforcement. Systems that you just can’t beat. Zypper. Did we miss anything?
Got any partners?
We are the unofficial partner of teamIO, a gaming community. Why a gaming community? Come on, all work and no play isn’t good. Our users of our distribution should also be able to have fun.
In fact, our buildsystem is shared with them.
